Smoking Photography

Every time I go home for break, I take advantage sprawling suburbia and enjoy breathing nice, clean air while running. In New Haven, a city, it never quite seems so fresh, and I wince every time I see people smoking cigarettes.

But what is makes me cringe even more is the way smoking is portrayed in countless photos, especially modern fashion shots.

It's touted in these images as elegant and chic - the epitome of class and sophistication. While many people will clearly not make decisions based are these images, it could still impact young and impressionable teens. Indeed, in a sense it seems almost comparable to how tobacco companies once targeted children.

Pretty color, but rather lethal.

There's no doubt that many of these images are stunning, but can't we find a new way to convey sophistication without the cigarette holder?

Other great behavior (sarcasm, clearly):

P.S. I saw The Insider, about a whistleblower of the tobacco in industry, in high school and thought it was quite terrific. I highly recommend it :)

Congratulations to Debra who won the Shabby Apple Giveaway!

I returned to New Haven last Saturday, and while I will miss home, I'm excited to start a new semester of adventures and challenges.

Kind of sad to read Adele saying that. Talent and a healthy weight aren't mutually exclusive...
